My first year as an Editor at OPEN Health Medical Communications: Eleanor Star
Written by Gabby Santa Cruz on Friday, November 20, 2020
We asked Eleanor to give us an insight into her first year as an Editor at OPEN Health.
In one sentence, please describe your role at OHMC
As an Editor, my role is to ensure that all materials created by the Med Comms teams have received thorough quality control checks; this includes reviewing spelling, grammar, style and formatting of a range of materials at multiple stages during their development.
In one word how would you describe your first year at OHMC?
Unpredictable.
How does your experience thus far compare with your original expectations?
This is my first role in medical communications, having previously worked in publications, so I started with an open mind, ready to take on a new challenge. It’s a far more fast-paced environment than my previous roles, which always keeps me on my toes!
What’s the culture like at OPEN Health?
The culture at OPEN Health is definitely what makes it a special place to work; all teams are really supportive of each other, and people are always willing to go out of their way to help their colleagues.
What training have you had in your first year?
With training and support from the rest of the Editorial team, I’ve been able to adapt my editorial skills to medical communications, finessing my use of PowerPoint and EndNote. Having access to training sessions on demand is really useful, especially when deadlines mean it’s not possible to attend the live sessions.
What have you learnt over your year?
Good communication goes a long way. The Editorial team is often working with multiple conflicting deadlines, and having a quick chat with the writing and accounts teams can help us to prioritise and relieve some of the editorial pressure!
What has been your best moment throughout your first year?
Not a moment as such, but I would say the best part of the year has been really feeling like a valued part of the team, within both Editorial and OHMC as a whole.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Everyone will have faced similar challenges in 2020—what a year! Luckily, I had 6 months to get to know the team and settle into OPEN Health before the first lockdown hit. Working from home full-time has definitely been a big adjustment for everyone, and I’ve found that having a morning routine with a quick run or walk is a great way to set myself up for the day.
What are you looking forward to in your second year with us?
Fingers crossed that we will all be able to see more of each other face to face in the coming year!
