Meet Craig Ornstein, an OPEN Health Scientific Trailblazer
Written by Christina DuVernay on Wednesday, September 4, 2024
Communicating the science—and the promising future—of oncology is what Craig Ornstein, PhD, excels at. As Senior Scientific Director of OPEN Health Science Communications, Craig is able to demystify oncology for multiple audiences, including healthcare providers, patients, and payers. In so doing, he builds on 30 years in the pharmaceutical industry, during which he has collaborated on the launch of several novel agents in oncology; these include an EGFR-TKI and PD-L1 inhibitor for non–small cell lung cancer, a PARP inhibitor for breast cancer, and a BTK inhibitor for chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
Craig leads strategic content development for a range of pharmaceutical and medical device products, communicating important scientific information across numerous channels. He deploys both his scientific acumen and his strategic medical insight in conveying disease-state scientific information, impactful clinical trial findings, and compelling pharmacoeconomic data to a range of stakeholders in the service of OPEN Health’s clients and the patients who will benefit from their therapies.
“OPEN Health is at the forefront of maximizing health and optimizing patient access as the norm to overcome the abnormalities that drive cancer,” he says.
Witnessing the transition in oncology from a systemic approach to a precision-based model that drives personalized medicine has been the highlight of his career. The ability to treat the right patient with the right drug means that cancer sufferers can receive the most optimal intervention for their unique disease. Craig says that he enjoyed an early career as an inpatient/outpatient provider of direct clinical care. However, he has been even more fulfilled by the broader impact on disease management accomplished through industry and marketing partnership on medication development, communication about these agents to relevant stakeholders, and efforts to ensure adequate patient access to treatment.
Craig holds a PhD in Clinical Health Psychology, with a focus on Neuropsychology, from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
His graduate school training in health psychology was eclectic, covering all general medical disciplines, and he chose to specialize in the central nervous system (neurology, psychiatry, and neuropsychology). He has always been fascinated by pharmacology, and the opportunity in his professional career to apply his early general medical training to a number of pharmaceutical industry–directed therapeutic areas has been an exciting and rewarding experience.
In marrying science to strategic communication, Craig is a Scientific Trailblazer at OPEN Health.
